The different benefits between freebase and nicotine salt vape juice, which one works best for you?
A common question we get is what type of nicotine should I get. With both salt and freebase nicotine available for our entire illiquid catalog, it can get a bit confusing for a newcomer to vaping salt and freebase. Nicotine has its own benefits but which one works best for you well? Why don't we find out today!
Nicotine salts were first introduced into the market around 2012 but didn't start getting popularity until about 2017. With devices like the JUUL, nicotine salts are made by taking regular freebase nicotine and adding benzoic acid. Adding benzoic acid lowers the ph levels in the nicotine thus creating a much smoother hit. This is why you typically see higher concentrations of nicotine with nicotine salts like 30, 40, or even 50 milligrams per milliliter. Due to the higher more efficient strengths with nicotine salts, they are paired perfectly with small compact systems that don't produce a lot of vapor. like for example, a pod system. Now my first impressions of a high nicotine salt liquid in a pod system were that the sensation is very similar to a cigarette. this is why I usually recommend anyone looking to quit smoking to start out with say a pod system and a high nicotine salt liquid because the overall sensation won't be too far off than what they're used to.
However, with nicotine salts, there are a few trade-offs. for the most part, vapers enjoy some sort of throat hit when it comes to vaping. And a lot that contributes to throat hit is nicotine. Again because salt nicotine is smoother than freebase, it's much easier to overconsume nicotine especially if you're using a device that produces a bit more vapor. Also, due to the typical higher concentration of nicotine salt, e-liquid flavors can definitely start tasting either muted or just different.
So in short, if you're looking to quit smoking with vaping’ and or you want to vape a small low-powered system’ the nicotine salts in a higher strength might work perfectly for you. However, if you're looking to exhale plumes of vapor and you want to fully taste an e-liquid, then we need to start talking about freebase nicotine.
Freebase nicotine has been around essentially since the start of vaping. It is the most bare-bones form of nicotine there is when it comes to vaping. Freebase nicotine is the most widely used form of nicotine, and due to the lack of benzoic acid found in nicotine salts, freebase nicotine is harsher in equal concentrations. This is why you typically see lower concentrations of freebase nicotine. For example, many freebase nicotine e-liquids maxed out at 20 milligrams, now freebase nicotine is usually recommended for any system that outputs a bit more vapor than say a pod system. As these devices emit more vapor, more nicotine is also being delivered to the user, this is usually why freebase nicotine is recommended for these types of devices, as they need to more efficiently intake nicotine is out the window due to the higher power output. What I usually find is that many ex-smokers at first make the switch over to vaping start with nicotine salt, but over time slowly transition over to freebase nicotine.
Now one very important note here is that everybody's body is different and will react differently to both types of nicotine. Some people prefer lower concentrations of salt nicotine for their sebum setups, and other people prefer high levels of freebase nicotine for their mouth to lung setups. If it works for them that's completely fine. that's just one of the awesome benefits that vaping has to offer the user has so many different options to cater to how they want to vape.
The recommendations I made in this video are a nice kind of ground base to start from and you can kind of start tinkering from there to see which one works best for you now.
